Minutes of the Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee

March 18, 2009

People attending: Arline Borchers, Stan Moore, Ken Yowell, Norma Jean Ferguson, Larry Arrowood, Mike Davis, Shellie Arth, Rose Anne Huck and Cynthia Crawford.

Chair Stan Moore called the meeting to order.  He mentioned that this committee has been active for five years.

Ken Yowell moved and it was seconded to approve the February minutes.  Motion passed.

Shellie Arth and Mike Davis representing the Democrat Newspaper, showed how their website could be an asset to tourism development with a banner and landing site.

Larry Arrowood briefed the committee on Jim the Wonder Dog efforts.  The Jim Park and Garden continues with the leadership of Friends of Jim.  Members are needed and welcome. There are memberships for individuals, couples and organizations/businesses.  June 9 is an event at the garden for members.

Wonder Dog Day is May 2.  There will be at street fair from 11 to 1.  There will be some dog events including tricks, Jim look-alikes and costume contest.  It is a Friend raiser, not a fund raiser.  There are many additional things planned, too.

Stan and Larry are still working on website development funds.

Cynthia reminded the group of the Jim the Wonder Dog Story developed by the Warrensburg PBS channel.

The State Division of Tourism must approve the website development work before it is made public.  The project is Jan. 1 to June 30, 2009.

Arline Borchers announced that the quilt block for the Arrow Rock area is completed.  It is the “Santa Fe Trail” block.  There are blocks going in around the Sweet Springs area.  The Quilts and Barn project is moving forward.

Norma Jean Ferguson thanked the group for their support of the Gees Bend Quilt Show this fall.  The newspaper has done a nice write up already.  The Quilt Show, including Gees Bend quilts, is moving forward.  It is the last weekend in September.

Pam Thom. has pointed out that readers can submit information to the Family Circle magazine on events.

Cynthia reported on the success of the Women in Ag/Ag Landowners conference that had an Agri-Tourism Track that included Farmer’s Markets, Regional Cuisines, Barns and Quilts and the Old Trails Regional Tourism Partners.  160 attended the conference.  A next step will be to make the event two days.  The Martin Community Center worked beautifully for the event.

The Old Trails Regional Tourism Partners met in Marshall last evening.  That group is moving forward with By-ways Designation at the state and federal level.  The group really appreciates the Tourism Commission’s and this committee’s support of the regional concept.

Stan has communicated with the affiliates on funding approval for 2009 and the reimbursement process.

The State of Saline County is set for Arrow Rock on April 23 from 5-9 p.m. at the schoolhouse.  They would like a table of information.

Ken announced the Spring Fling is in May.  The Santa Fe Trail Days will be at the park this year the 2nd Saturday in September.  It will coincide with Kid’s Day in the park and a disc golf tourney.

The next meeting is the 3rd Wednesday in April at 9 a.m. at the Saline County Extension Center.

Submitted by Cynthia Crawford, Recording Secretary
