Minutes of the Chamber of Commerce Tourism CommitteeApril 21, 2010 Present: Stan Moore, Arline Borchers, Bill Riggins, Pam Thomeczek Chair Stan Moore called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. Stan reported that Missouri Tourism has a new feature on their website, VisitMo.com. The site features a tourism guide where events can be listed. The Marshall Chamber needs to encourage its affiliates to submit events for inclusion in the listings. Stan reported that LeAnn Huston has been hired to work part-time in the Chamber office. This will allow Jill more time to work on Marshall tourism business. Bill Riggins reported that he had contacted MoDot about placing local attraction names on blue highway signs on I-70 (near Marshall Junction). He was referred to a private contractor. Although the signs are less than 50 miles away, they may contribute to the State Scenic Byway Project becoming more “Visitor Ready”, which is a requirement to move on to the National Scenic Highway designation. Stan asked Bill to further explore this opportunity for Marshall attractions. Stan reported that the application for the $5,000 Division of Tourism grant is be due on September 1, 2010 for funding during the January-June 2011 time frame. The funding from a previous grant was used for brochures. We should think about ordering more brochures (for 2011) and trying to distribute them along the Highway 65 corridor from Iowa to Branson. Stan reported that the Boonslick Tourism Council FAM Tour is scheduled for May 26 with a short stop in Marshall. Bill and Arline will coordinate efforts to have the group tour the Nicholas Beazley Museum. Stan announced that the Boonslick Tourism Council is sponsoring a Rubber Duck Race along the Missouri River from Glasgow to Boonville on May 22. Proceeds will benefit the barn quilt project. Stan reported that the application for the Old Trails Regional Tourism Partnership state scenic byway designation should be submitted this month. He has obtained letters of support from the Saline County Commission, the Marshall City Administrator, the Marshall Chamber of Commerce, and the Village of Arrow Rock. Stan reported that the Old Trails Regional Tourism Partnership is encouraging its members in the 9-county area to participate in a literature exchange with businesses displaying literature from other businesses along the trail. The next Old Trails meeting will be May 11 at 4:00 in Rocheport. Stan reported that the Friends of Jim the Wonder Dog will sponsor Wonder Dog Day on May 8. Bill announced that the Pancake Day will be July 11 at the Marshall Airport. The next meeting of the Tourism Committee will be Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at 9:00 am at the University of Missouri Extension Office, 353 S. Lafayette. Meeting adjourned at 9:55.
