Minutes of the Chamber of Commerce Tourism CommitteeSeptember 30, 2009 Present: Stan Moore, Pam Thomeczek, Ken Yowell, Bill Riggins, Cynthia Crawford Guests: Norma Jean Ferguson, Donna Rothermich, Chamber Officer Ron Duvall Chair Stan Moore called the meeting to order at 9 a.m. Bill Riggins moved and it was seconded to approve the minutes of the August meeting. Motion passed. The Marshall Quilt Guild had a marvelous quilt show this past weekend. Congratulations was expressed to Norma Jean, Donna and the entire quilt guild. The show had nearly 1,000 participants. The Gees Bend quilters were delighted to be in Marshall and had a marvelous experience. The more they learned about the town and county, the more interested they became. Nearly 250 flyers from the tourism committee were distributed. Norma Jean had a printed summary report she distributed to the committee. The theme this year was “Oh the places you go.” Donna and Norma Jean will chair the event next year. The theme will relate to home sweet home. Ken reported A Missouri Life article features community slogans and it highlights. It highlights Marshall’s “Smart dog, nice folks” theme. Stan passed out grant application requests that have been submitted. The 2009 grants are for the calendar year. At this point we are 75% through the year. Stan discussed the Civil War event in 2011. Peter Warnock at MVC and Greg Wolk are wanting to get organized in the county however they need collaborators. Stan has been e-mailing people. There is grant money on the table for this group if leadership will step forward. The OTRTP brochure is now printed. Stan showed a sample brochure. The 2010 application is in progress. Stan has a notebooks in progress for the commission members. Applications are due October 7. The Commission is asking that brick and mortar projects also come through this committee. Stan discussed adding a development section to the application. One consideration is the frequency of use of the facilities. Cynthia felt like we would need to be willing to consider brick and mortar projects from any organization. An explicit application process, dates, deadlines etc need to be consistent for all to have as objective and consistent process. Ken moved that this committee move forward with the brick and mortar applications (development projects). Bill seconded. Motion passed. Current commission members are: The committee appreciates that the Commission has the confidence in this committee to route applications through this committee. Ideas for the 2011 application process:
Cynthia asked the committee how to best market the OTRTP November 19 seminar. Target participants are agriculture producers with an interest in agri-tourism, tourism advocates and city/county officials. Pam suggested that people with any interest in tourism will benefit from the seminar. MVC will be doing press releases. Bill suggested marketing through 4-H and FFA families. We underestimate what we offer to visitors in this area. This tourism committee needs to recruit new members to our group. Rose Anne has moved away and Angie has retired from the committee. This is an open group. Committee members need to be chamber members to vote. Pam moved and it was seconded to adjourn. Motion passed. Next meeting is October 21, 9 a.m., Saline County Extension Center.
